Asphalt shingles are certainly one of the most popular choices around the country, and because they are so ubiquitous, roofing contractors know what is likely to happen to them as time goes by. In addition, they know that thermal splitting is a potential problem, and you should also be aware of it.
When your shingles tear or crack, this is due to expansion and contraction. Clearly, the shingles are exposed to the sun’s heat and will enlarge during the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest. Conversely, the shingles will contract as the sun passes over the horizon.

You’ll also need to look closely at your other roof furniture for signs of wear and tear. For example, you may have skylights, chimney stacks, or roof-mounted HVAC units. In each case, you must ensure that the shingles and other components that help to define and protect these items are still in good working order. If they are not, you may need to take action.
Have you noticed water stains on some of your interior walls or ceilings? This can be due to water infiltration and often due to shingles in poor condition. You want to take urgent action if you come across roof leaks, which can lead to bigger issues, hidden mold, mildew, and health-related concerns.
Be aware of the tell-tale signs of roof issues, indicating a pressing problem. While you may not find it easy to access your roof for a close-up inspection, you can nevertheless look from ground level and see if you have any missing shingles or if there is any evidence of curling, cupping, cracking, or splitting.
Pay close attention to the area around your skylights and chimney stacks and look for evidence of granules in those gutters. It’s a good idea to inspect the ground next to your downpipes after a heavy rain shower, as this will give you a good indication.
