1. Do You See any Tearing, Cracking, Curling, and Capping of the Roofing Material?

In addition, they know that thermal splitting is a potential problem, and you should also be aware of it.

When these shingles crack, you will notice characteristic lines across the surface. When they split, you may see a deep indentation that runs the entire shingle length, unlike cracks that are surface-deep. 

As each shingle spits, it will separate the individual layers, which are just held together with a simple fastener. Cracking tends to happen over a longer period, while those thermal events tend to create much smaller tears instead.

Occasionally, your shingles may begin to curl when the edges start to turn upwards. The center of the shingle may take on a concave appearance, known as “cupping.” These damaged shingles could be caused by variations in temperature, making them brittle. 

Eventually, the damage will build up to such an extent that the shingle may break free from the roof, especially on a windy day. You may begin to notice gaps that could be scattered around the roof or concentrated in one area.

2. Are You Noticing Discoloration on Your Roof?

While shingles may stay in place and not crack or split, they may start discoloring. They may accumulate some unsightly dark streaks, which are often linked to a certain type of algae or mold and mildew buildup. 

If you live in an area where air quality is affected by industry, your shingles may also become dirty due to airborne contamination that may stick to the surface. This type of discoloration will not help your property’s curb appeal either.

3. Are You Coming Across Granules in Your Gutters?

Each of your shingles will be covered by special granules that protect them against ultraviolet rays and help with fire resistance. Over time, they may fall off and accumulate in your gutters. If you notice a few of these, it may not be anything to worry about, but if there are a lot, you should take notice. 

Heavy rain can sometimes cause the protective coating to erode, as can a buildup of algae or moss. Remember, these granules are meant to protect the surface of each shingle, and in their absence, they may be more susceptible to curling, cracking, or breakage.

4. Are You Finding Issues Around Skylights or Chimney Stacks?

You’ll also need to look closely at your other roof furniture for signs of wear and tear. For example, you may have skylights, chimney stacks, or roof-mounted HVAC units. In each case, you must ensure that the shingles and other components that help to define and protect these items are still in good working order. If they are not, you may need to take action.

5. Do You See Staining Inside Your House?

Have you noticed water stains on some of your interior walls or ceilings? This can be due to water infiltration and often due to shingles in poor condition. You want to take urgent action if you come across roof leaks,  which can lead to bigger issues, hidden mold, mildew, and health-related concerns.
